Selling hair is a way to earn some extra cash that many people don’t realize is even an option. Selling your hair is a unique experience in so many ways. I first had the idea after reading the classic, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

Since 2013, I have sold my hair three times. Friends and strangers have reached out and asked me how I did it. I’d love to share with you my experiences with some tips and tricks to get the most for your hair.

Hair buyers are looking for specific things when they buy your hair.

  • Virgin hair. No dyeing, no perm, no change to the natural hair.
  • Hair that is all the same length. No layered or styled hair.
  • Length of hair. The longer your hair, the more money they will pay. Minimum 12” for maybe a couple hundred dollars max, most buyers want a minimum of 20” and will ask you to grow your hair longer. I got $800 for 24” and $1000 for 31+”
  • Color and texture. Straight black hair won’t get as much as natural blondes or reds or natural beautiful curls.

When you’re ready to sell your hair, the first thing you need to do is to take really good pictures of your hair.

Tips for taking good pictures:

  • Go outside for natural lighting. You want to show the natural shine and color of your hair. Do not go out when the sun is the brightest. Keep away from any kinds of shadows.
  • Choose a nice background. I think beautiful backgrounds could enhance the picture and draw more attention to your ad. Be careful of having a distracting background that will draw attention away from looking at your hair.
  • Zoom in. Get as close as you can to your hair and show it’s length. Fill the frame with your hair. The main focus of the picture is your hair, not your background.

Pictures to take:

  1. Your hair down to see the full length and it’s beauty.
  2. Hair in a ponytail next to a measuring tape so you can show the length of the hair. Only show the length of the section you are willing to cut.
  3. Use a measuring tape to also show the thickness of the ponytail.
  4. A picture of your hair in a braid.
  5. A picture of your hair up in a bun.
  6. Another option that would be good to have is a video of your hair coming undone from your bun.

Now that you have your pictures ready, you’re ready to post your at your hair for sale. I’ve always sold my hair with Buy and Sell Hair and had great success finding a great buyer.

Choose your best four pictures to post to show your hair’s beauty, length, and thickness. Your other pictures have ready when people ask for more pictures.

You will get all kinds of strange or weird requests like asking you to shave your head or growing your hair for another year. Before posting, know your limits and don’t get offended. Tell people what your limits are and let them go. Other’s will come and you will find your right buyer!
